First get it covered with paint

Well, her head and forearm look like detached puppet limbs, but every bit of the surface is painted. Next week I’ll go in and repaint the hair, adjust the neck so it matches her face, and soften that wooden arm.

I’m just glad she has fingers now.

It looks a lot better in evening lamplight than it does in washed-out daylight. When I get fed up, I’ll just hang it in the hallway where there is no natural light and call it a design element.

So this year my goal is to “put down the feel-bad machine”. Go analog, read books, journal on paper, only post art (here I have rationalized “but this part of the  post is just a quick update, it doesn't count”). It had all been going pretty well - and then my car was burgled.

Nothing was taken, because I don't have drugs or cash or snacks or whatever the hell else they thought I'd be keeping in a glove box

So now we have new locks and a home security system that has been pinging me with hundreds of alerts a day for every marauding chicken, cat, and pigeon that passes by. This feels kind of the opposite of disconnecting from the feel-bad machine. NICE TRY, TECHNOLOGY. I am handing the digital reigns over to the man and teenager. They can yell with their analog voice boxes when it's time for me to come charging out of bed with a baseball bat.

  1. I realized that I use technology for self-validation and now I worry that I'm just showing off instead of "sharing". I used to keep a paper journal, but can't for some weird probably-psychotic reason. :(

  2. Sharing and showing off are close to the same thing, you don't have to worry about that. The paper journal is wonderful because you can write shamelessly about your co-workers and annoying relations, and the line-a-day diary is good because you can potentially solve crimes/prove people WRONG. Look at it like this: the blog is what you tell anyone, the diary is what you tell your kids (with bonus crime-solving potential), the journal is what you tell yourself. I don't have a burn-this-when-I-die diary, because that is called "text messaging". All sorted.
