I really still don't know what I'm doing, but the only way out is through. Plunge on.
This painting could use a second pass to clean up some of the wonky lines and add texture to the background, but I'm happy with it as a one-sitting portrait.
Also pictured: the small painting I'm waffling about adding a complicated background to - I like the hair and ear, but not the face, so I either have to fix it, finish it as-is, or abandon it. Meeehhh.
